このスレはとりあえず文法はあまり気にせずにとりあえず英語
を書いてみよう！というスレかも知れませんが、There の使い方
で今までずっと思い違いをしていたことがあったので書かせて
下さい。

Thereって普通、
There was a loud bang.　とか
There were two lound bangs.

Thereのあとの動詞 はreal subject(a loud bang/two loud bans)に従い
ますが、

real subjectが、２つ以上の場合、

There was an orange and two apples.
There were two apples and an orange.

という具合に、first part(an orange/two apples)に合意すると
\”ABC of COMMON GRAMMARICAL ERRORS\”　に
書いてありました。文法ってエンドレスに奥が
深い…。

X Inside the room there were a table and two chairs.
○Inside the room there was a table and two chairs.

You can use \”proper English\” already; my entry is not a lecture at all!

By the way, can you tell the difference the sentences below?:

1. She was knitting a blue-coloured cardigan.

2. She was knitting a blue cardigan.

According to the grammar book mentioned before,\’Blue-coloured\’
means \’having a colour similar to blue, but not really blue\’. (p.156)

Summary:
a blue cardigan=青色のカーディガン
a blued cardigan=青色に近いけど正確には青色でないカーディガン

「彼女は青色のカーディガンを縫っていた」と言いたいのなら、
○She was knitting a blue cardigan.

Now, can you tell the difference of these sentences?
Which sentence is more desirable?

1. He wants to go to university. But he doesn\’t want to leave home.
2. He wants to go to university but he doesn\’t want to leave home.

anser is 2. 書き言葉では文頭に接続詞のBut やAndをもってくるのは、
望ましくない。

Happy New Year!

I decided to write my first post of this year on this thread.
My English skill was little improving with this thread last year.
I want to make it a rule to write a English post as much as possible.
That is my new year\’s resolution.

How about this ?
My New Year\’s Resolution is to register my graduation thesis.

By the way, I called my Indonesian friend and Indian frien., the other day.
Fortunately, their family and relatives did\’t get any damages of earthquake　and　Tunami .
But another Sri Lankan　friend who lives in Japan said she can\’t get through her friends .
I just hope they are all right.
In fact ,I \’d like to go to these countries for long time,
so for me this disaster was not an affair of other people.
I felt sorry and pray for many victims of this Tunami.

I\’m not sure but I understand the register is necesary procedure to graduate.
And, what to regiser is not a graduation thesis itself. What to register is ….

被害者は１５万人も超えるそうですね。　親戚や友人知人などが巻き込まれた方も

かな？（ちょっとしつこめかも）

日本人自身はあまり意識しませんが、日本語は曖昧で、「卒論指導登録をする」
というのは、論理的には実は、

「する、しない」

の問題ではなくて

「できる、できない」

の問題なはず（でないと「登録すりゃいいジャン」と突っ込まれます(^-^;;)）。
