Semicolons are not always necessary but are desirable. Unlike a colon,
a semicolon does not introduce; unlike a comma, it does not enclose;
and, unlike a full stop (period), it does not terminate. The semicolon
can be used instead of co-ordinating conjunctions like \’and\’, \’but\’, \’or\’,
\’neither\’, \’nor\’, \’for\’ and \’yet\’, and is often used to separate clauses
already joined by conjunctive adverbs like \’thus\’, \’however\’,
\’consequently\’, \’therefore\’, \’moreover\’, etc.
